Kangana Ranaut’s Bold Exit and Reinvention Masterclass
In a moment of movie-worthy drama, Kangana Ranaut is on the high-profile comeback trail, as she is recreating her past claim to “quit Bollywood” into a fabulous “reinvention.” The no-limits star posted a clip from an early Simi Garewal interview on her social media a few days ago where she casually declared, “I don’t want to stay in Bollywood forever.” TV-savvy Kangana even praised her younger self as “cool” and “fan-worthy,” as if to give her former self a pat on the back.
Back then, Kangana depicted Bollywood as “a polished world where everything is fake,” a surreal landscape devoid of reality. She talked about her “fake bubble,” and stated that to live, she needed “genuine,” something her typical glamour-saturated environment lacked.
Then, quite fast-forward to the present: she was no longer just an actress—she was also now a Member of Parliament, she was a filmmaker, and now, an unapologetically independent and authentically rigorous voice in both art and politics. Less than six months after that last statement, Kangana won the Mandi Lok Sabha seat and signaled that she was not running away from it; she was regenerating it
And there is more. She is now the director and star of Emergency, a film in which she plays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, which contains conflicting dualities
. In a press conversation, Kangana expressed that she initially thought Indira was powerful, but after doing research, she seemed “weak and unsure.” She was so committed, she collaborated with the costume designer of the film to copy the slight subtleties of Gandhi’s signature preeminence in her glasses and hairstyle
This radical self-reinvention, however, was not simple. She endured an eight-year endurance test—feeling “exiled” from her profession—she even moved to California, lived in Calabasas, and wrote and directed a short film while away . Then she re-emerged as a cultural juggernaut in 2014 with the Oscar-nominated, female-led mega-hit Queen, illustrating to pop culture audiences that she is a force to be reckoned with.
