Udaipur Files is an upcoming film that dramatizes the brutal 2022 murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal.

“Udaipur Files,” a brand new film, is generating a buzz across India, even prior to its release. The film is expected to dramatize the brutal murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor from Udaipur, Rajasthan, who was murdered in broad daylight on 28 June 2022 by two men.

The incident resonated across the country and turned into a nightmare. A film is being created from the incident, which is likely to expose the complexity of radicalism, hate, and failures of law and order.

Udaipur Files is making waves in political, religious, and film circles. Some are calling it a courageous step to portray the “truth”, and others have concerns about exacerbating communal strife in an already delicate country.

Kanhaiya Lal, a Hindu tailor from Udaipur, was killed on June 28, 2022, in his shop by two men who posed as customers. The attackers murdered him with sharp weapons, filmed their act, and released it on social media, claiming their actions were a reprisal for Lal’s support of Nupur Sharma, a BJP spokesperson who had reportedly made controversial statements about the Prophet Muhammad through social media postings.

The assassination was condemned at the state, national, and international levels. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the investigation and classified it as a terror attack. The assassins were connected to radical groups, and the incident revealed the tenuous nature of peace in India’s communal areas.

The creators of Udaipur Files claim that it isn’t just a film about a murder, it is about “the chain of events that led there, the aftermath, the media coverage, and the anguish of the victim’s family.”

Directed by Satyanshu Singh, the film will be produced under Vedanta Pictures, which produced several political and social themed drama films which grossed critical acclaim. The film is said to be intense, emotional, and brutally honest.

He also stated that the script came from NIA charge sheets, victim families interviewed, accounts of eyewitnesses, and media reports. The team also spent weeks in Udaipur speaking to locals and shopkeepers, or people who had witnessed the tension in the air in the days before the incident.

“Udaipur Files” is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, but it will certainly get its share of ink time. Whether it opens eyes or opens wounds remains to be seen, but one thing we can be certain of is that it will not be ignored.
